locomotive horns

- models & history

- modern railroads

CSX primarily uses the K5LA with the number 2 and 4a chimes reversed on most of their engines except for a few Leslie S-5T's on former Seaboard System and Western Maryland units. CSX also uses the Canadian tuned K5H on their C39 and C40-8's standard cab units.

Norfolk Southern uses the P5H or P5L series horns on just about all of their standard cab second generation units. This was the horn of choice by the Southern Railway which NS seemed to adopt after the merger between Southern and N&W in 1982. Norfolk Southern's newer third generation units with the wide safety cabs are being delivered with the K5LA-R24. Conrail used the Leslie S-3L chime horn exclusively. Since the break up of Conrail both CSX and Norfolk Southern have been removing the Leslie S-3L's and replacing them with K5 and P5 series Nathan horns respectively.

Union Pacific as well as the Burlington Northern Santa Fe and their predecessors have always been a long time users of 3 chime horns. The K5 series horns never made it big on western railroads. UP and BNSF opt to use the K3HA or K3LA. Some old Leslie S-3L's can still be heard on some older UP or Santa Fe engines and if your lucky you might catch a old Cast P3H on a ex Southern Pacific unit.

Amtrak and Metra seem to use a mix of K5LA's and P5La's.

Below are descriptions of each Nathan models notes and frequencies. To the right are sound clips of some of these horns, enjoy!
