In mid July I took a rail-fanning trip to what I call the heart of railroading, Pennsylvainia. My first stop was the
city of Altoona, home of the world famous, Horseshoe Curve. A major engineeering feat for it's time as well as an
intrigal part of the rail transportation industry to this day. I say world famous due to the fact that during world war II
the nazi's had plotted to blow-up part of the curve in an attempt to disrupt the american war machine. Needless to say, it
didn't happen.
Below are some of the highlights of what I saw, a few notes:
- Everything but the Amtrack trains had helpers, going up or down.
- It's a VERY busy set of tracks, at one time it was 4 tracks now it is just 3, Amtrack usually
on the number 2 track (center). In 1 hour I saw 8 trains.
- Best of all you don't need to bring your scanner, they have one plugged into a loudspeaker so you
can hear all the action that's going to be coming and going.
- You can bring your own chairs, food, beer may be questionable
- If by chance you can get to horseshoe curve I would highly reccommend it. It's a great place to fan, benches pic-nic tables, no
shade so if it's hot dress for it.
- There is a great campground in Altoona "if" your a die-hard railfan, it's small and privatly owned but "VERY" clean. email me if your intersted in finding this place.
